While pediatricians are experts in child development, short office visits and sterile clinical settings can make it difficult to see the whole child or to identify when a child is developing differently or may benefit from support. Medical conditions, hearing and vision problems, language and cultural differences can complicate the picture of a child’s development.  

Standardized screening tools such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire and MCHAT were developed to quickly identify children who need further evaluation during short well child visits. These tools do not provide an individualized picture of your child’s unique profile of strengths and challenges or your family’s unique circumstances.

Medical providers too often take a wait and see approach, but there is plenty that can be done early and early interventions are much more efficient than later.

When differences are identified, many families are unsure which services or evaluations to seek out. Many are concerned about the impacts of labeling a child. I will talk with you and observe your child in a calming, comfortable environment, review any medical or developmental history, and recommend a pathway for further evaluation or services if appropriate. I can place referrals or provide your pediatrician with recommendations for referrals. You will feel heard and that your child’s uniqueness is understood.
